The Lagos Zoo (Zoo de Lagos) was first opened in 2000 and is now home to hundreds of species of plants and animals from all over the world. Here you can see monkeys, llamas, wallabies, sheep, giant porcupines as well as rare and exotic birds. The Zoo was founded on the principle of conservation and education, this isn’t the typical big commercial zoo, its focus is having a beautiful intertwining space were you can see up close and even touch and feed some of the animals, its a great place for children with more than 120 animal species from 5 continents for them to enjoy, there is so much to look that one visit might not be enough!
Plus the Lagos Zoo has all the conveniences you would expect, a typical Portuguese restaurant, a snack bar, picnic areas, children’s playground, children’s petting zoo as well as a souvenir shop.
The zoo is open all year round, during winter season (from Oct to Mar) its normally open from 10h to 17h and for the summer season (from Apr to Sept) its open from 10h to 19h, please take notice that some enclosures inside, like the bats or some of the monkeys have different visit or feeding times.
To get to the Zoo, its very easy as there are plenty of signs pointing you in the right directing, normally you should head along the EN125 from Lagos towards Vila do Bispo and make a right turn at Espiche. From Espiche follow the signs to the Lagos Zoo which is located just outside the township of Barão de São João.
